Elsie Wright, 16 Years Old 1901 - 1988 An artist who attended Bradford Art College since she was 13 years old. She worked in a photographic lab and a greeting card factory during the |
war. In the darkroom her job was to create composite photos of fallen soldiers with |
pictures of loved ones. She also had the opportunity to work with plate cameras. |
Later she emigrated to America to escape the media attention. To her dismay the tales |
of the Cottingley Fairies were well known even in Maine. |
Elsie married an engineer and then emigrated to India, where she was an army driver |
during the war. She returned to England after the 1947 declaration of independence and |
soon the media tracked her down and her privacy was lost again. |

most reproduced photo in history and is instantly recognized by people across the |
world. Throughout her life she kept her continued to inform the inform the media that |
the pictures were not faked. When she was elderly, she admitted that the photos were |
faked, during an interview. She still maintained that she really did see fairies and she did |
play with them at the Beck. |
